Intern Designs Payload Integration System for NASA

UAS Test Site intern Edward Gesser last week successfully completed a second test of his payload integration system designed for NASA.

The 3D-printed system makes it possible to carry a NASA hyperspectral sensor payload using the DJI M600. But perhaps the biggest benefit of the system is its modularity.

“The sensors need to be placed in a precise manner so that they can collect the data,” explained Gesser, a mechanical engineering student at the College of Southern Maryland. “Because of the modularity of my system, I am able to change things around based on the tests results to facilitate their needs without having to print any additional parts.”

A third round of testing is slated for July 31st.

The project is one of two payload design efforts led by Gesser this summer. He has also partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to develop a box capable of protecting sensors in case of a crash.
